Snowy weather activities

Here are some ideas for you to try if you are stuck at home in snowy weather.
Imaginative Snow Stories

Use the opening phrases to start a story about the winter weather. Alternatively, use one of the titles to write a story about winter.
I woke up this morning to a blanket of crisp snow...

The snow had finally stopped falling, and we were ready to conquer it...

Dragging his sledge behind him, Charlie set off on his adventure...

Titles
The Blizzard

The Snowman

Winter Wonderland

Reading recommendations

Choose a book at home you have really enjoyed reading. Write a short review you could share with the class. Use the internet to find out about the author. Create a fact file about the author. Find out what other books they have written.

Personal Project
You could continue with research on your WW2 personal project. If you want to create a model for your presentation then this would be a good time to do it!
Winter artwork
Create a picture to show the wintry scene from your window. You could use pencil, pen, paint or you could create a collage.

Practise your measuring skills
Follow a recipe from a recipe book. This is great for practising your measuring skills, especially if you need to double or halve all the ingredients!
REMEMBER TO ASK AN ADULT BEFORE YOU START TO DO ANY COOKING!

German
Learn the German numbers from 1 to 20. (Go to Google translate if you can’t remember how to pronounce them.)
1
eins
11
elf
2

You could also go to You tube and find and learn the German alphabet song.

Times tables practice

Practise your times tables. You could do this on your own or ask someone at home to help you. Study ladder is always useful for practising maths skills and I will make sure there are always some tasks set for you during snow closure days.

Hoy Trip Pictures!

At last here are some of the photographs from the Hoy Trip!  Miss Shearer has made collages of all the different activities to include as many photographs as possible but she is going to make a disc for everyone to have with more photographs on it to have as a keepsake! For now though here are some photos of our fantastic trip!

Day One

The Golden Marianna Boat Trip - we were all very excited to be on our journey to Hoy!

Once we had walked up the hill to the Hoy Centre, which was quite a climb, we got to find out which room was ours, dropped off our cases and found out what activities we would be doing.  We started off with a 'magic wand' activity where we had to lower a pipe to the ground with just our fingers.  It was tricky!  We also had to try and tie a 'reef knot' using a huge piece of rope and everyone in the class.  It was tricky too!

After this we left the Hoy Centre and headed for the beach to have lunch and do some Archery.  We worked in our three groups - The Fat Sausages, The Streaky Bacons and The Fried Eggs - and competed with each other to win the most points and to see who could pop the balloon first.  It was great fun and we really enjoyed it!  The rain didn't even put us off!

After this we headed along the beach to do some 'Beach Art'.  We worked in small groups to create a piece of art from what we could find on the beach.  We had everything from mermaids to teradactyls to stick men!  The Mermaid and The Sand Faces came joint first in the competition but Mr Macleod thought everyone was really a winner!

We headed back to the Hoy Centre and got ready to have our tea - which we were all really looking forward to after all that fresh air!  After tea Nigel played some games with us and told us there would be a talent show the next evening and that we all needed to take part in it.  We all set off rehearsing what we were going to do the next evening!  We then watched a bit of Despicable Me and relaxed after a hard afternoon!  We showered and got ready for supper - hot chocolate and biscuits! Yum! We headed to bed after this to get a good nights sleep before another busy day!

Day Two

We were up bright and early and raring to go on Day two!  We were going on a Gorge Walk first thing so we needed to get ourselves organised by time. After breakfast we got all our waterproofs, boots and helmets on and headed in the Mini Bus to the site of the Gorge Walk.  It was amazing!  We didn't realise when we first set off just what it was going to be like!

Down in the Gorge we had to negotiate rocks, water and plenty of slippy surfaces.  We had to use ropes to get us down some of the steeper parts and it took us about an hour and a half to reach the bottom.  After a quick rest we headed back up the way however, it only took us 15 minutes to climb back to the top!  We were pros by the time we got to the top!

We went back to the Hoy Centre and had our lunch and a much needed rest!  Then we prepared ourselves for an afternoon at the Sandy Loch where we would work in groups doing lots of different activities.

Nigel helped us to make our own bows which we then used to fire arrows as far as we could into the heather.  The bows were good and our arrows went pretty far when we fired them!

We also got to try our hand at 'bushcraft' - making our own fires and using them to heat water in Kelly Kettles!  We used the water to make a cup of hot chocolate!  We had to gather the fuel for the fire and use a fire stone to create a spark to light the fire.  It was really hard work and we were glad we weren't relying on making our own fire to cook our food for the evening!

We also did canoeing on the Loch.  We had to make a raft with two canoes as it was quite windy and we needed our strength all together.  We learned how to paddle and how to work together to steer the canoe!  After all that we had to make sure we 'thanked the fishes' for letting us paddle on the loch!

After all that we headed back to the Hoy Centre and we all couldn't wait for our tea!  After we had eaten and cleared our things away, we had our final talent show practices.  We gathered in the hall and got ready to show the rest of the class our talents!  Mrs Whitford and Mr MacLeod were really impressed with the standard of our talents - we did everything from drama to quizzes to singing!  Chloe, Isla and Amber were declared the winners after a closely run contest!  We all enjoyed a boogie to their song before settling down to watch the last part of Despicable Me.  After showers we were ready for supper and bed as we were pretty tired!

We were up and on the go early again the next morning ready for a good helping of toast and ceral and making our own packed lunches.

For our last activity of the trip we headed into The Hoy Woods for some Orienteering.  We had to climb lots of fences before we reached the woods.  Mr Taylor managed to fall over climbing over once fence so we had to make sure he got over the rest of them safely! We had to find different posts in the woods using a map and find the letter on the post.  It was tricky to navigate our way around the woods but we managed not to get too lost!

We then worked in small groups to create a shelter for ourselves if we were very small and stuck in the woods.  We had to think carefully about what material we could lift and how we could make sure our shelter stayed up.  It was a great activity to finish off our trip to Hoy!

We headed back to the Hoy Centre for the final time to have lunch and tidy up before the Boat.  We had a fantastic time and got to experience some amazing activities.  Everyone did something that they were proud of during the trip and some people even conquered fears they had!

We headed home with some brilliant new memories of our class trip to Hoy!

Our Victorian Assembly

Yesterday we presented our Assembly to some of our families and the rest of the school and we did very well!  The audience really enjoyed it and were entertained throughout!  We also looked the part in our costumes!

Here are some photos of us performing our scenes.

The Life of Queen Victoria

Housing in Victorian Times

Child Labour

A Victorian Schoolroom

Here we are looking very Victorian in our costumes!

We are very pleased with how our assembly turned out!  Mr Taylor kindly filmed some of it so Miss Shearer will put up some clips of it soon!

Enterprising P6

As part of our Hanging Basket Enterprise Project we learned about marketing and how it is important to a business.

Miss Shearer's Mum came in to help us with this as she used to teach people about marketing at Orkney College.  We had to find good examples of adverts in magazine and discuss why we thought they were good.  Then we designed our own adverts which are going to go in our letters to business and hopefully make them want to buy our Hanging Baskets!

We will be writing our letters to businesses soon and hopefully getting lots of orders!

Maths the Active Way!

In maths in P6 we are learning to use whole numbers to add and subtract.  As part of this we have been working on a variety of different activities, most of which have been active games.  We have really enjoyed doing these active lessons and have developed our understanding of whole number through this.

This is us practicing our addition skills by finding a partner when Miss Shearer shouted 'stop' and using the numbers on our whiteboards to make an addition sum which we had to solve as quick as we could!  We did some very speedy maths!

Then we worked with a partner to make addition and subtraction sums using the numbers we rolled with a dice.  This really tested our skills as it could have been any number we rolled!

We all agreed we liked this way of learning in maths and we are going to keep doing a variety of active activities in maths!
