Up levelling a sentence

In our grammar lesson we were using our knowledge of language to improve a sentence in different ways.

We started with:

the cat sat on the mat

We then chopped up our sentence so we could add more detail to it, and to make it more interesting.  We call this up levelling.  We up levelled in 4 stages.

for example:

1. The fat cat sat on the mat.

2. The fat cat sat on the green, fluffy mat.

3. Quietly, the fat cat sat on the green, fluffy mat.

4. Quietly, the fat cat, called Kitty, sat on the green, fluffy mat.

We thought that our finished sentences were much better than the ones we started with.

The great thing about this activity is that we could all up level within our own ability using the skills we each know.

We have decided to have a go at this when editing our story writing.
