Volcano Building and Erupting
Last week we were focusing on natural disasters. The pupils were able to identify events which happen in our world which we have no control over. These included extreme weather disasters such as tornados, floods, droughts etc.
We also looked at disasters caused by the movement of the tectonic plates under the earths crust. When these move or bump into each other then serious things can happen above ground. Earthquakes, tsunamis and volcano eruptions can happen.
We spent a lot of time exploring volcanoes this week. We researched how they are created, what happens during an eruption and where they are located in the world.
Ask us to tell you something about volcanoes. I bet you will be amazed at what we know!
We decided that we needed to build a model volcano to help us learn more about them (pupil directed learning opportunity) and also just to have a bit of fun with explosions!!!
Here we are building the models:
Step 1: Mixing the ingredients together
Step 2: Building the volcano from the salt dough we created
Step 3: Painting our volcanoes to make them look realistic
Here we are researching more about volcanoes:
We used the websites: Weather WizKids and Woodlands Junior Volcanoes to help us find out more. We are using this information to write a non-chronological report about volcanoes in our story writing lesson.
Here we are erupting our volcanoes in our fun science experiment!
It was really important to follow the instructions very carefully. We were keen to just get straight in and start mixing the ingredient although we decided that this might not work if we mix them in the wrong order. We were all very good at following the instructions correctly and every vocano erupted brilliantly!
