Building a Shelter

Last week we were continuing to explore the basic needs required to survive.

During our hall time we worked together to build a shelter which would hold all of us in it.

Miss Kelday set out lots of equipment and gave us 30 minutes to build our shelter.  She watched carefully to see how well we did...

(this was very interesting viewing!!!)

When we started we all raced off to start building.  There were lots of little groups making mini shelters all over the hall.

Some of us tried to gain control of the group so that we could work together.  This didn't work as everyone was so keen to get building.

It began to get a bit chaotic and we were no closer to building a successful shelter so Miss Kelday had to step in to give us some advice.

Advice:
Let someone take control of the group as a natural leader and listen to this person.
Find out what equipment you have to use.
Decide what you want your shelter to look like.
Share out the building jobs.

We started again and called a group meeting to discuss our ideas further.

Some of us took on the advice given and began to work together as a stronger team.
Some people were still very keen to work alone and do their own thing.

Eventually a shelter started to take shape.

When the time ran out we all managed to fit into the shelter.

After we had finished we spent some time discussing how well we did.  We knew where we could improve our group work to make the process easier.

We have asked Miss Kelday if we can have another try at this activity so we can show how much we can improve our skills....and because it was such good fun!
