Lunar Theme Park

(maths/project)

In the last 2 weeks of term we linked our learning in the areas of maths and project.  We completed a problem solving activity which involved us designing a new theme park on the moon.

The purpose of this activity was to help us improve our knowledge of large numbers and use of the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division operations.
We were also learning to calculate profit and loss.

First we had to plan out our theme park.  We were given a budget of £500,000 and a list of the prices for rides and services.
Here we are in our groups, calculating what we could afford to build...

Then we planned out the layout of our theme parks.  We had to think of a good way to make our plan clear and easy to calculate how much we were spending as we went along.  One group decided to start colour coding their plan and the other groups through this was such a good idea they followed suit.

The next few sections of the activity involved completing lots of sums.  We worked together really well and helped each other when we were stuck.  We enjoyed using whiteboards to try out our sums as it meant we could easily correct any mistakes.

Task 2 involved calculating our spending.  We were told how much money it cost for staff, electricity and maintenance of the different types of rides and services and we had to work out how much we had to pay out each day depending on what we had in our theme parks.

Task 3 involved deciding on an entry fee for the theme park.  We were then given the total number of people who came to the park for 1 month and had to work out our daily income.

Task 4 had us calculating the spending of the visitors in our cafes and shops.  We were told that each visitor spent £3 in each cafe and £5 in each shop.  This involved a lot of multiplication sums.  Miss Kelday noticed a difference in our confidence in completing these types of sums as the task continued.

Task 5 - This was where we began to look at profit and loss.
We took all of our daily totals for the previous tasks and worked out whether we made money or lost money by completing the following sum...

Entry fee + shop income + cafe income = income total
daily spending = outgoing total

income total - outgoing total = profit or loss

This bit was quite tricky to grasp but when we helped each other it began to make more sense.  This task relied heavily on good presentation and organisation of the previous few tasks so we could easily find the totals we needed.

Task 6 - this involved advertising our theme parks.  We could create a leaflet, radio or tv advert.  Each one cost a different amount and would attract a certain amount of extra customers.  We didn't quite get this finished before the holidays but our adverts were beginning to look good.

What a lot of effort went in to making this task successful.  P6 worked hard with their numeracy skills and group work.
WELL DONE!
